this is just a notes dump although it could help a few people out






Dominant First-order: Hebbian learning
When two neurons fire together repeatedly, the connection between them gets stronger.

Mechanically: Neuron A regularly fires right before neuron B, the synapse connecting them gets strengthened, making it easier for A to trigger B next time.

→ So, repetition of a pattern makes that pattern more likely to fire again, "network A activating B."

For example: feel understimulated → open phone → feel better. "C" That loop is Hebbian too. Every time you run it, it gets stronger and easier to trigger.

Why this helps in our case: every repetition counts.
So, even the small/short study session reps count if you complete them.
These study sessions are Hebbian reps for the study pathway.
Quick analogy: if neurons are people, synapses are like phone lines.
Hebbian learning strengthening a synapse is like upgrading a phone line, making
the call get through faster and more reliably.


Second order: Homeostatic Plasticity each Neuron's own Stabilizing Mechanism


If a neuron's been "too loud" (overactive) lately, it turns all its connections down together.
If it's been "too quiet," it turns them all up. This keeps the whole system from spiraling out of control while Hebbian learning reshapes individual connections.
This is why "just be more disciplined" fails. Discipline is vague — neurons don't strengthen from vague intentions. They strengthen from the same specific pattern, repeated.
Study more" wires nothing.

This maps onto Cue → Routine → Reward.
The cue fires the first neuron.
The routine is the pattern getting wired.
The reward is what makes your brain want to fire that loop again.
No stable cue = nothing consistent to strengthen.
Old pathways don't get deleted.
The "understimulated → phone" loop doesn't vanish when you build a new one, it just weakens from disuse while the new pathway strengthens from use. You're not erasing it. You're outcompeting it.
This is why slipping back under stress is normal, not failure. The old wiring is just quieter, not gone.

Realistic timeline: noticeable synaptic strengthening from consistent reps takes weeks, not days.
Homeostatic plasticity is exactly why.
The system resists fast change to stay stable.
