This is one of those stories that you can't make this up. I would be LUCKY (and so would you, including the informant watching me) if I only had to pay $70 to have ANYTHING repaired, or just inspected. I just recently had some routine auto maintenance (oil change, fuel line cleaning, and filter) and paid $217. Which in-and-of itself, is pretty cheap for automotive nonsense. (Fuck, if I just wanted my car looked at to find a problem, how much would most repair shops cost???)
But this lady was charged $70 to have her dryer inspected to find what the issue was. The guy came out and diagnosed it. She decided to shoot at the repairman instead of pay this bill. This was far more rational than other reactions, such as: ask what the total repair bill would be, ask to review the contract, or pay upfront and possibly sue later if she felt she was scammed.
She got 10 years in prison, in part due to prior convictions, a warrant, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
